Six Ways to Bet One Playoff Game. One of Them Is Cheap.

One October night, walked through hour by hour: the 3pm line and what it costs, the 4pm lineup drop, six ways to bet Braves at Cubs with real BetUS prices, the rain and pitcher rules, and the midnight parlay that loses nine percent before first pitch. Written for the once-a-year viewer who funds the account in crypto and wants to know where the money actually goes.

Forget the bracket for a minute. October baseball for a once-a-year viewer is one game at a time, usually a night game, usually with a drink, and the betting menu for that one game is where every mistake and every good habit lives. So this is the whole thing walked through as a single evening: the afternoon before first pitch, the lineup drop, the first five innings, the bullpen hours, the last out and the settlement. Real prices throughout, from BetUS's board for Braves at Cubs on 15 September 2026, captured at 07:30 UTC (source): Cubs -135 (1.74) and Braves +122 (2.22) on the moneyline, Cubs -1.5 at +152 and Braves +1.5 at -175 on the run line, total 8.5 at -110 each way. Both teams are in MLB's playoff picture as of 14 September, the Braves as the NL three seed and the Cubs as the first wild card, so this is roughly what a Wild Card Series game will look like on your screen two weeks from now. If you fund accounts in crypto, our crypto sportsbook bonus guide covers the deposit side; this piece is about what happens after the money lands.

3pm: the price before anyone knows anything

The line you see in the afternoon is the book's opinion plus its margin. Convert both moneyline sides to percentages: Cubs -135 → 135 / 235 = 57.4%; Braves +122 → 100 / 222 = 45.0%. Sum 102.4%. The 2.4 points over 100 is the hold, and 2.4 / 102.4 means the book keeps about 2.4% of a balanced book on this game. That is a cheap line. Compare the total, priced -110 on both the over and the under: each side implies 52.4% (110 divided by 210), the pair implies 104.8%, and the hold works out at 4.5%. The book is charging you nearly twice as much to bet runs as to bet the winner, on the same game, and it does that on almost every baseball game because totals are harder to price and the public loves overs.

What the line costs you: three price shapes you will see in October
Dime line: -105 / -105
105 / 205 = 51.2% each. Sum 102.4%. Hold 2.4%.
Common on baseball moneylines at reduced-juice books.
Standard: -110 / -110
110 / 210 = 52.4% each. Sum 104.8%. Hold 4.5%.
The Braves-Cubs total on 15 September.
Lopsided: -135 / +122
57.4% + 45.0% = 102.4%. Hold 2.4%.
The Braves-Cubs moneyline on 15 September. Cheap by football standards.
Hold = (sum of implied probabilities minus 100) divided by the sum. Lower is better for you. Across a month of bets the difference between 2.4% and 4.5% is the difference between a small loss and a bigger one at the same win rate.

Now the afternoon job: find out whether someone else has a better number. VegasInsider's multi-book listing on 10 September had the Dodgers to win the World Series anywhere from +160 to +210 depending on the book (source). That is the same bet paying $16 or $21 on a $10 stake. Game lines drift less than futures but they drift, and two accounts is the minimum for anyone who wants to be a customer rather than a donor.

4pm: lineups drop, the line moves, and the pitcher rule matters

Baseball is the sport where one player, the starting pitcher, sets the price. A scratched starter can move a moneyline by 40 or 50 cents. BetUS's answer is blunt: its baseball rules state that all MLB wagers "are now Action pitchers" and "Listed Pitchers are no longer offered", so whoever ends up on the mound, you keep the price you took. Regulated books mostly give you a choice, Action by default with an opt-in listed-pitcher ticket that gets refunded if the named starter is swapped, according to Action Network's rules explainer. In a playoff game you will rarely see a late scratch, but in a Game 4 where the manager is deciding between a bullpen day and a tired ace, the difference between a voided bet and a bet stuck at yesterday's price is your whole stake.

The practical rule for a first-timer: wait for the lineups, which in October usually post around three hours before first pitch. Bet after them, not before. Nearly all the sharp money in baseball moves in that window, and if you bet before it you are guessing about information the market will have shortly.

6pm: six ways to bet one game, from safest to silliest

Braves at Cubs, $25 on each marketBetUS, 15 Sep 2026, 07:30 UTC
1
Moneyline: Cubs -135
Win $18.52 on $25 (25 × 100 / 135). Implied 57.4%. The plain bet. Extra innings count.
2
Moneyline: Braves +122
Win $30.50 on $25 (25 × 122 / 100). Implied 45.0%. Underdogs in baseball win more often than football dogs; a 45% dog at +122 is a normal night, not a longshot.
3
Run line: Braves +1.5 at -175
Win $14.29 on $25 (25 × 100 / 175). Implied 63.6%. Cashes if Atlanta wins or loses by one. You give up most of the underdog payout for the one-run cushion.
4
Run line: Cubs -1.5 at +152
Win $38 on $25 (25 × 152 / 100). Implied 39.7%. Needs a two-run win. Looks generous; it is priced at the same margin as everything else.
5
Total: over 8.5 at -110
Win $22.73 on $25. Implied 52.4%. Nine runs or more. Voided if the game is called before the ninth (or before the bottom of the ninth with the home side ahead), per BetUS rules.
6
First five innings line
Not on the board at capture. Graded on the score after five innings, which makes it a bet on the two starters with the bullpens removed. BetUS needs five complete innings for an F5 run line or total to stand.

One more market you will see in the series view rather than the game view: the series price. Instead of picking Game 1, you pick who advances. The Wild Card round is three games, all at the higher seed's park; the Division Series is five, split two home, two away, one home. Whatever the length, BetUS grades a playoff series ticket purely on who advances, with starters and game count irrelevant (same rules page). For a once-a-year viewer this is often the cleaner bet: you are backing the better team over a small sample rather than one starter on one night. It also takes away the itch to double up after the first game goes wrong, since your position is already on.

7.40pm to 9pm: the starters' innings, and why F5 exists

A modern starter goes five or six innings. The first-five line is a bet on that stretch alone, and it exists because the two things that decide a full game, the bullpen and the manager's nerve, are nearly impossible to price in advance. If your read on the game is "the Cubs' starter is much better than Atlanta's", F5 is the bet that expresses that read without paying for the seventh, eighth and ninth. If your read is "the Braves' bullpen is a mess", the full-game line or the over is where that read lives. A first-timer does not need a read at all, but knowing which market matches which opinion stops you making bet number four when you meant bet number one.

9pm onward: the live screen, and the market the league itself capped

Live betting is where recreational money goes to die, and baseball is the worst case because every pitch is a repricing event. The book's data feed runs seconds ahead of your broadcast. The number you tap is not the number you get, and books protect themselves by holding your live bet for a few seconds and rejecting it if the line moved. If you bet live at all, do it between innings on the full-game or remaining-innings line, when nothing is happening on the field.

Then there is the market that made news. Last November, in the wake of the Emmanuel Clase and Luis L. Ortiz indictments over allegedly fixed pitches, the league and its authorised books, which it says represent over 98% of US handle, put a $200 ceiling on any wager settled by a single pitch, ball-or-strike and velocity included, and barred those markets from parlays (MLB.com, 10 November 2025). When a league negotiates a limit on a market with its own betting partners, that market is telling you something about itself. Leave it on the screen.

Rain delay: what the settlement desk does next

BetUS baseball house rules, the parts that matter in October
Moneyline: 5 innings
4½ is enough when the home team is ahead. Extras count.
Run line and total: 9 innings
8½ with the home side ahead. A run line never voids for extras.
Pitchers: Action only
A swapped starter changes nothing on your ticket.
Playoff series: winner only
Game count and starters do not matter to the grade.
Quoted from the BetUS baseball rules page, read 15 September 2026. Other books differ; read yours before a rain-threatened game.

The trap here is a suspended game. A 3-1 lead through six innings that gets called is a win on the moneyline and a refund on the total, and people find that out by reading the settlement rather than the rules. Think back to how last season ended: Game 7 in Toronto on 1 November 2025, Dodgers 5, Blue Jays 4, eleven innings, Miguel Rojas tying it in the ninth and Will Smith winning it in the eleventh (Wikipedia). Anyone on Dodgers -1.5 lost by the width of one run. Anyone on the Dodgers moneyline cashed. Anyone on an over needed the two extra innings to get there and got them. One box score, three different results, every one of them written in the rules in advance.

A note on funding the account before first pitch

If you deposit in crypto, and most of our readers do, the timing matters more than in a card-funded account. A Bitcoin or Litecoin deposit needs network confirmations before the book credits it, and confirmations take as long as the network decides that day. Send the money in the afternoon, when you are line-shopping, not at 7.35pm when the lineups are in and the price is moving. Stablecoins settle faster on most rails but check which network the book accepts before you send anything; a deposit on the wrong chain is a support ticket, not a bet. And keep the deposit to the month's budget rather than "enough to be safe": the easiest way to bet too much in October is to have it sitting in the account already.

One habit to build from night one: write down the price you took, then check that market again as the game starts. Took Cubs -135 at 4pm and they closed -145? You held the better number, regardless of who won. Closed -125? You overpaid. That comparison, the closing line, is the only scoreboard that does not care about a bloop single in the ninth, and it is the one that predicts whether your October ends up or down.

Midnight: the parlay you were about to build

It is late, the Cubs won, and the app is suggesting you combine tomorrow's three favourites. From the same 15 September board: Yankees -173 over the Twins, Phillies -210 over the Nationals, Padres -190 over the Rockies. In decimal that is 1.578 × 1.476 × 1.526 = 3.55, so $20 returns about $71, a payout of roughly +255. Now the version the app does not show. Each leg carries the book's margin, so strip it out: Yankees 63.4% implied against the Twins' 39.5% is a 102.9% market, fair chance 63.4 / 102.9 = 61.6%; Phillies 67.7% against 35.5% is 103.2%, fair 65.6%; Padres 65.5% against 37.6% is 103.1%, fair 63.5%. Multiply the fair chances: 0.616 × 0.656 × 0.635 = 25.7%, which is fair odds of 3.90. The book is paying 3.55 for an event worth 3.90; the difference is 9% of your stake, gone before a pitch is thrown, and it grows with each leg because the margins multiply. Three moneylines at about 3% hold each become a 9% hold together. The parlay tax is not a metaphor.

Stake sizing is the last thing and the least interesting. Put in what you are willing to lose for the month, stake one to two percent of it on each game, and keep it flat. The Kelly criterion, which sizes bets to your measured edge, will tell a first-timer to bet very small because your measured edge is zero; flat staking arrives at the same number without pretending. Small stakes, two accounts, prices written down: that is the entire difference between someone who bets October for fun and someone who pays for the book's next commercial.
